The Hidden City Philadelphia Festival 2013

The Hidden City Philadelphia Festival celebrates the power of place through the imagination of contemporary artists, inspiring people to explore the city’s history and imagine new futures for our urban landscape. Artists of diverse disciplines and media create site-specific work that illuminates abandoned, obscure or inaccessible sites throughout the city.

The Hidden City Festival 2013 will take place from May 23rd to June 30th, and feature a wide array of installations, performances, exhibitions, talks and tours. Tickets go on sale May 1--sign up to be notified by email about special discounts, performances and events.
The festival will feature eight sites of historical and community interest, including several buildings looking for new ideas to bring them back to life, from the vacant and beguiling Germantown Town Hall, to Shivtei Yeshuron, a 19th century row house synagogue in South Philadelphia.
Creative Director Lee Tusman has curated a series of 10 projects ranging from social experiments that invite the audience to participate, such as Jacob Wick’s creation of government offices for an imaginary “Free Germantown” inside Germantown Town Hall, to massive, sculptural installations by the collectives Rabid Hands and  Dufala Brothers. The lineup of artists also includes the collectives Camp Little Hope, King Britt and Data Garden, Ars Nova Workshop, and artists Ben Neiditz and Zach Webber, Andrew Dahlgren, and Ruth Scott.
Funding, volunteers and materials for this year’s festival are being crowdsourced through this web platform, which was developed by Hidden City with the help of a grant from the Barra Foundation. The festival is also funded in part with grants from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
This will the second Hidden City Festival. The first one in 2009 captured the public’s imagination by opening up remarkable buildings such as the Metropolitan Opera House, Royal Theater, Shiloh Baptist Church and Disston Saw Works.
There were a total of nine sites and 10 projects in 2009, featuring work by such artists as Stan Douglas, David Lang, IƱigo Manglano-Ovalle, Steve Roden, Sanford Biggers, Wally Cardona, John Phillips/Carolyn Healy, Todd Reynolds, Phil Kline, Steven Earl Weber, and Aleksandra Mir, as well as local ensembles and presenters, such as Network for New Music, Group Motion Dance Company, Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia, Leah Stein Dance Company, and Ars Nova Workshop.
The 2009 Festival won the Henry J. Magaziner Award from the American Institute of Architects’ Philadelphia Chapter, City Paper's "Big Vision Award,” and Philebrity’s “Best Gathering of 2009 Award.”

New Philadelphia Sports Complex - Not just about South Philly Anymore

The "New" Philadelphia Sports Complex

Philadelphia is a city steeped in tradition.  It's been said that history, sports and food make this city run  (not necessarily in that order).

For years when anyone referred to the "Philadelphia Sports Complex" that meant South Philadelphia and specifically the intersection of Broad Street and Patteson Avenue.  There you would find the monoliths of Philly Sports: Veterans Stadium and the Spectrum Arena.

Fast forward to the 21st century and the streets and major teams are the same: Flyers, Phillies, Sixers, Eagles.  The arenas are new; the monoliths migrated across the street from that famed intersection. Now fans arrive at Citizens Bank Park, Wells Fargo Center, Lincoln Financial Field and Xfinity Center.  But there's another address, not in the old Sports Complex, a little farther out of the city that is getting Philly Sports Fans out of their Broad and Patteson comfort zone-- PPL Park. This state of the art arena on the banks of the Delaware River in Camden, NJ was built for the Major League Soccer team Philadelphia Union.  But it is also now the home to Legends Football and the Major League Lacrosse Championships.

So Philly Sports Fans are finding their way west to a new sports experience, not replacing the traditional, but redefining the term "Philadelphia Sports Complex".
It's not all about South Philly any more...
